Wednesday - Sunday (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM); evenings and weekends required

Organizational Background

NYSCI is New York City's science center, a place where everyone is invited to explore how science and engineering shape our world, and how we can use scientific tools and ideas to answer questions and solve problems. Visitors pose questions, design solutions, explore phenomena, and work together to make amazing things happen.

Located in Queens, one of the most diverse counties in the U.S., NYSCI welcomes 400,000 visitors annually, including families, students on field trips, and camp and after school groups. NYSCI also works with thousands of teachers each year to make classroom science more relevant, exciting and meaningful to students, and conducts innovative research about how science learning happens through everyday experience.

Our exhibitions, programs, and products are informed by strategies of engagement called Design, Make, Play. The defining characteristics of Design, Make, Play — open-ended exploration, imaginative learning, personal relevance, deep engagement and delight — are the ingredients that inspire passionate STEM learners.

FUNCTION

The Marketing and Business Development (MBD) team at NYSCI is responsible for many aspects of operations and public programming at the New York Hall of Science. The MBD team includes Visitor Experience , data analytics, marketing, brand management, and communications. The team is responsible for revenue generating activities like group sales, public programming, and rentals of the organization’s historic space.

POSITION OVERVIEW

NYSCI is seeking an innovative Business Development Manager (BDM) with a passion for science, education, and community engagement. The BDM plays a key role in driving the Museum’s outreach efforts, the visitor experience and public programming, enhancing brand visibility, and contributing to the growth of business opportunities.

Reporting to the Director of Public Programming and Partnerships,he BDMis a front-facing role working across teams, and with vendors and partners to set up and host events, manage staff and steward partnerships. The BDM supports market research, revenue forecasting , contract administration, and the creation of marketing materials.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Public Programs and Rentals Support:

  • Represent NYSCI at special events, public programs, and partnership events in the role of event host and setup captain. Host of special events and rentals at the NYSCI, and off site events with local partners.
  • Set up and manage audio visual equipment at special events, rentals, and public programs.
  • Administer contracts for rental clients, vendor agreements, performer agreements, etc.
  • Assist in scheduling and management of part time, casual, and full time staffing for public programs.
  • Evaluate the impact of Public Programs, Space Rentals, and Special Events; contribute as a key team member in developing evaluation mechanisms metrics.
  • Forecast and track revenue and expense and income according to NYSCI protocols utilizing tools such as google sheets, excel, signeasy, Quickbooks, and other tools as identified.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the rentals and public programs at NYSCI by participating in ideation sessions with the Marketing and Business Development team.
  • Work across teams at NYSCI to ensure the proper communication and tracking of Marketing and Business Development events as well as events and programs of other teams at NYSCI.
  • Support the Visitor Experience at NYSCI by covering shifts on the museum floor and working with the Manager of Visitor Experience to ensure an excellent customer experience.
  • Support the creation of programs, partnerships, and rental models in collaboration with the Institutional Development team.
  • Taking on the lead for special projects that connect the dots between NYSCI departments and the goals of the Marketing and Business Development Team.

Research, Business Development and Outreach:

  • Identify and pursue partnership opportunities to expand NYSCI's reach and impact.
  • Cultivate relationships with corporate partners, sponsors, and community organizations to drive business development initiatives.
  • Monitor various inboxes and communication streams for inquiries around rentals and partnerships.
  • Organize inquiries and generate leads for public programs and rentals.
  • Conduct market research to identify trends, assess the competitive landscape, and recommend strategies for growth.
  • Utilize data-driven insights to help inform the Directors and Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer’s decisions and optimize efforts across the team.
  • Assist in executing marketing strategies to promote NYSCI's programs, rentals, and business development using social media, email, and other tools for communications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support the creations of compelling content for digital and traditional marketing channels.
  • Collect and organize data to help the team monitor and analyze campaign performance, adjusting strategies as needed to maximize impact.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and leverage digital marketing tools to enhance outreach efforts.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

(1) Direct report, supervision of seasonal interns

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, a related field, and/or its work experience equivalent
  • 2 years experience in a Business Development, Public Events Management, Communications or Community outreach role
  • Prior experience to administer contracts, manage and track revenue and expenses
  • Knowledge of fundraising, development, and membership processes within cultural institutions.
  • Prior experience working with a range of clients across industries.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Commitment to the philosophy and mission of New York Hall of Science.
  • Interest in supporting marketing and communication efforts
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and social media platforms (Instagram and Facebook)
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with impeccable attention to detail
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically.
  • Skills in interfacing with the public, including crowd control and line management.
  • Flexibility and adaptability, availability to host weekend and evening events.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bilingual and multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply
  • Proficient in CRM and ticketing systems (Outbound preferred)
COMPENSATION

Commensurate with education, skills and experience; salary range is $60,000 - $70,000 per year.

Schedule will vary based on events and programs scheduled each week. Availability for nights and weekends will be necessary. Most of this work is in-person at the museum. Working from home on an agreed upon day is an option on slower event/programming weeks.
